DOE Awards $9 Million to 12 Projects to Advance Desalination and Water Reuse Technologies Across the U.S.

NALA Membranes is the lead on one of 12 projects that were awarded $12 M USD by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to advance desalination and water reuse projects. The award made in conjunction with the National Alliance for Water Innovation (NAWI), will drive decarbonization of the water and wastewater sectors to treat, reuse and recycle water to bolster water circularity. The projects will provide important initiatives to provide climate resilient and cost effective water supplies.

NALA Membranes and research partners – California’s Orange County Water District (largest indirect potable reuse water treatment plant in the world), and Trussell Technologies (leading water system design firm specializing in innovative solutions) – will develop an universal pre-treatment protocol for wastewater that reduces the cost and complexity of reverse osmosis systems for water reuse. The project team will use NALA Membranes’ novel chlorine immune non-polyamide membranes and pre-treatment methods to prevent biofouling and sustain high recovery of clean water.

Headquartered in North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park in the U.S., NALA Membranes’ Singapore subsidiary – NALA MEM Pte. Ltd. – is an active participant in the Singapore Membrane Consortium and conducts development and commercial activities with NTUitive’s Separation Technology Applied Research and Translation Center, PUB and other key stakeholders.
